First Windows Phone 7.8 updates hitting the Nokia Lumia 800 now

We thought that Windows Phone 7.8 wouldn’t be arriving until after Christmas and New Year, but it seems that Nokia has got the ball rolling ahead of schedule. WP7.nl reports that some Lumia 800 handsets are now receiving the update in the Netherlands.

Recently the official Windows Phone 7.8 firmware appeared on NaviFirm; a third party software and ROM installation tool for Nokia devices. This was a pretty big hint that an official roll out was coming, and shortly after it was spotted on Nokia’s own servers.

According to the dutch Windows Phone site, some users are now receiving the coveted update via Microsoft’s Zune software. Apparently there will be one Nokia update to install first, followed by four much bigger updates. The final version should be 7.10.8858.136, which is Windows Phone 7.8.

Once installed, the update will bring about a portion of looks, apps and features from the new king, Windows Phone 8. Included is the Xbox Live Tile, resizable tiles and new wallpapers and ringtones.

We’ve checked on our Lumia 800 here and it seems there’s currently no sign of Windows Phone 7.8 in the UK. However, with the Netherlands being first to receive the update, we would imagine the rest of Europe isn’t too far behind.
