Toshiba Announces New Tablets, Including Excite 13, Excite 10 and Excite 7.7

Toshiba has announced three new tablets in its ultra-thin Excite range, all with model numbers that reflect their screen size: 7.7 (standard for a small tablet), 10 (standard for a full-size tablet) and 13 (whoa!)

Let’s have a look at what’s going on with each tablet, starting with the diminutive Excite 7.7. It comes with an AMOLED display of an unknown resolution, probably a 16:10 aspect ratio like 1280 x 800. It’s powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 high-powered Quad-Core processor, and comes with 1 GB of RAM and either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage. The battery life is expected to be about 10 hours, which is pretty good for a tablet of this size. The 7.7 also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel camera on the rear. Finally, it runs stock Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).

The Excite 10 is the mid-size option, competing with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Apple iPad. It has a 1280 x 800 LCD display, and is powered by the same Tegra 3 processor and 1 GB of RAM. Connectivity and cameras are also the same, as is the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Where it differs is the inclusion of a full-size SD card slot and improved 13 hour battery life.

And finally we’ve got the monstrous Excite 13. The mammoth tablet’s 13” backlit LED screen runs at 1600 x 900, a 16:9 aspect ratio that should be make it great for gaming and films, if a bit unwieldy when in portrait mode. Otherwise, it’s similar to the Excite 10, with the same connectivity options, cameras, battery life and OS. There’s no sign of the aerial that was spotted on its initial outing in Toshiba World a few weeks back.

All of the tablets look interesting and could prove popular thanks to their use of stock Ice Cream Sandwich. The most standard Excite 10 ($450) will be out on May 6th, while the more interesting Excite 13 ($649) and Excite 7.7 ($500) will be released on June 10th.
