The top 5 games for Android smartphones right now

I’m a massive gamer nerd, so I’m always playing – whether it’s on my gaming PC, consoles or Android. Android tends to have a much more rapid release for titles than other systems, as the games tend to be a bit easier and quicker to develop – and that makes them a lot harder to keep track of! In this article, I’ll show you the five best games I’m playing right now – the essential accessories for my Nexus 10!

5. Modern Combat 4

Gameloft is not well known for being an original developer, but they are known for taking good ideas from console and PC games and implementing them on mobile platforms. Their Modern Combat series apes Call of Duty fairly successfully, not least of which is the most recent addition, Modern Combat 4. The game boasts impressive visuals and a reasonably intuitive control scheme, although the campaign is quite staid. Multiplayer is somewhat more lively, with a range of maps, modes, weapons and unlocks. All in all, an unadventurous but enjoyable experience that will push your Android phone or tablet to its graphical limit.

4. Tekken Card Tournament

Tekken Tournament? For phones?! That’d be pretty cool, but the addition of the word ‘Card’ between ‘Tekken’ and ‘Tournament’ signals the diversion of the famous fighting series into rather new territory. One-on-one brawls are still the subject at hand, but this time instead of throwing out the right combos at a rapid pace the focus is on choosing the right moves using collectible cards. It’s a bit of an odd combination, but it works well and it’s fun watching the characters on screen act out your commands. It’s free, too!

3. Pixel Dungeon

Pixel Dungeon is a rogue-like, a game in which you descend through a series of randomly generated dungeon levels fighting a sprawl of enemies, finding loot and upgrading your character. Pixel Dungeon is rendered in an endearing retro pixel style, but where the game truly excels is in its addictive gameplay. Progressing through even the first three levels is difficult, with traps and enemies around every bend, but if you’re up to the challenge then moving onto the lower levels is eminently rewarding.

2. Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon is a brilliantly simple game – you’re a triangle, rotating around a hexagon as shapes come crashing towards you. Dodge them by rotating out of the way, tapping on the left side to go counter-clockwise and right to go clockwise. With difficulty levels that start at “Hard” and progress from there, it’s a challenging but enjoyable test of your reflexes, set against a backdrop of ever-changing colours and a banging chiptune soundtrack.

1. Flow Free

This is an older game, but one I’ve only just discovered and one that I’ve been spending far too much of my time playing as of late so it deserves the top spot today. The gameplay is simple – connect ‘pipes’ between every two dots of the same colour, while laying pipe in each sector of the grid. It’s simple on the beginner 5 x 5 grids, but the difficulty increases as you move towards 10 x 10 and beyond. With hundreds of levels available for free and hundreds more for a few bucks more, you can spend a lot of time here. A great puzzle game that’s suitable for all ages.
