Supposed PS4 specifications leak from latest developer kits

Details surrounding the sort of power Sony’s PlayStation 4 will possess have been supposedly leaked, with the tipster claiming to have gotten the specs from the latest developer test console.

Passed to Kotaku, the information is said to have come from official Sony documentation on Orbis, which is supposed to be the working name for their next-gen home console. It’s reported that the source is the same person that attempted to sell early developer versions of the next-gen Xbox on eBay last year.

The information lines up with previous reports we’ve seen, including information on a completely new controller system. Rumour has it that Sony will stick with the winning formula of four buttons, two analogue sticks, shoulder buttons and vibration, with the inclusion of something new: a touchpad. It’s thought that the touchpad system could be integrated on the back of the PS4 controllers, just like on the PS Vita.

This pad will apparently be usable for directions and such in games, and will also be entirely ‘clickable’, allowing gamers to use it like a mouse.

A full run-down of the console’s specifications are as follows:

  • System Memory: 8GB
  • Video Memory: 2.2 GB
  • CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” (so, 8x cores)
  • GPU: AMD R10xx
  • Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
  • Drive: Blu-Ray
  • HDD: 160GB
  • Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels

We’ll be taking this with a larger than usual pinch of salt after yesterday’s exciting Xbox 720 rumour turned out to be an elaborate hoax. Still, we’re expecting the PS4 to be somewhere around this mark in terms of power.

As for when we’ll see the next PlayStation is anybody’s guess. Sony exec Kaz Hirai has said that the company doesn’t want to launch a console first as rivals may copy, so it could be a waiting game.
