Sony NGP Delayed till 2012?

Reports are coming in that Sony’s next big gaming console the Sony NGP (formerly known as the PSP 2) may not see the light of day in Europe and the US in 2011.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton took to the press via Bloomberg and stated that the Sony NGP may arrive in just one region this year rather than Asia, Europe and the US simultaneously.

That would surely mean that the handheld gaming device would be released first in Japan with the rest of the world having to wait a few months.

The delay on the console’s release is a direct result of the March 11 Japanese earthquake and following Tsunami and nuclear issues… so it’s not really something that can be helped.

In the interview Tretton stated:

“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’”

The silver lining to this is more time for developers to get their hands on the products and make better software and games, but the bad news is that the gap will give rivals Nintendo almost a year to establish its 3DS console.

We are as excited about the NGP/PSP2 as the next person but no-one can really blame Sony for putting less focus on the console in light of the tragedies in Japan.
