Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch to launch on September 4th at IFA 2013
Samsung will launch its first ever smart watch next month at the annual IFA tech show in Germany.
According to Sam Mobile, a site which has an excellent track record with Samsung rumours, the watch will make its debut on September 4th at the same Samsung Unpacked event as the Galaxy Note III.
Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Gear, the watch has previously popped up a number of times in various reports over the past couple of months. A patent filing shows what the watch could look like (above), and it certainly looks to be running Android and designed to complement a Galaxy smartphone.
Although not definitive, the patent design resembles the sort of product we would expect from Samsung. The watch face appears to be like a miniature phone, sporting capacitive touch buttons for the back and menu functions of Android, just like a phone does. Many believe that this design suggests that the screen will be flexible to bend around the wrist. We already know that Samsung has been working on curved OLED displays, so this could well be a possibility.
So far we know little about the functionality of the Galaxy Gear, although it seems a given that it will act as a wireless companion with Samsung’s Android smartphones. We suspect that it will offer similar functionality to Sony’s Smart Watch 2, with message and call alerts, apps and other functionality. Perhaps Samsung will put S Voice on there so you can just speak your voice commands into your wrist – that would be pretty cool.
Samsung’s event is looking to be quite the blockbuster affair already, but will it top that over-the-top broadway event for the Galaxy S4 from earlier in the year?
