RIM announce BES will work with iOS and Android in next update

  • by

Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that its exclusive Blackberry Enterprise Server technology will be made compatible with iPhone and Android when it is next updated.

Blackberry Enterprise Server (or BES) is Blackberry’s exclusive email and sync client which is normally used by businesses and large corporations who deploy Blackberry handsets to their employees. Until now, the service has been exclusive to Blackberry devices, but today at the Blackberry World conference RIM has announced it will soon be compatible with iOS and Android.

“The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is designed to address a growing market and respond to requests from enterprise customers who want a secure multi-platform device management solution from a company that already delivers the gold standard for enterprise mobility,” said Peter Devenyi, Vice President, Communications Platform Group at Research In Motion. “We recognize the opportunity to continue leading in the enterprise market by providing customers with a common platform to help simplify the management of a variety of mobile devices.”

RIM say that thanks to a new technology they have recently acquired called ubitexx, they will be able to use a virtual environment which will run email components for Blackberry, iOS and Android at the same time. What this means for the customer is that they will have the option to control other smartphone platforms using the BES client.

We think that RIM is making the right move by welcoming other smartphone platforms in and interlinking their own platform in. Could this be the first step towards Blackberry Messenger coming to Android and iPhone?
