RETRO REPLAY ► SEGA Game Gear Classics Arrive on Nintendo 3DS eShop – Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi & Dragon Crystal Now Available!
While the Gadget Helpline’s RETRO REPLAY is in pause mode here’s a byte-sized update to keep our nostalgia lovin’ gamers satisfied until next week – and to give new readers an introduction to the kind of games the feature covers on a weekly basis!
Those of you who remember the SEGA Game Gear will be pleased to find out that a few classic titles from the early 90s portable are now available for the 21st century handheld Nintendo 3DS. The titles, from the colour rival to Nintendo’s Game Boy, include Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, Shinobi and Dragon Crystal and these games are now available to buy (firstly in the U.S) through the Nintendo eShop and prices range from $2.99 to $4.99.
Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble is based on the gameplay and themes of SEGA classic Sonic 3, with bot bashing action and fast-paced zones to best while hunting down those Chaos Emeralds. This side-scrolling Sonic instalment also features the character Knuckles and appears on Nintendo 3DS as it did on the Game Gear, so if you’re only familiar with the Mega Drive / Genesis version, this one looks and handles a little differently but is by no means less of a blast to play!
Shinobi follows the path of a Ninja master fighting against a rival clan to protect his students from the forces of evil in Neo City. Slicing through opponents with a katana blade, this is a kick-ass side-scroller and a stand out classic from when these types of games were at their peak of popularity. You get to play it all over again on Nintendo 3DS through the eShop.
Dragon Crystal involves 30 worlds of magic and fantasy and, dare we say, closely resembles the earlier Legend of Zelda games and later the Pokemon games. Gathering weapons, potions and tools players travel four kingdoms while carrying (or dragging) a huge dragon egg and work their way through dangerous and difficult labyrinths on their quest to find the Magic Goblet.
To grab these SEGA Game Gear titles, Stateside players can do so through the Nintendo eShop for 3DS today, and these titles should follow for the European eShop a short time later.
If you don’t yet have the eShop on your gaming gadget you’ll need to update your Nintendo 3DS system. The Gadget Helpline previously showed readers how to do this and that helpful feature can be found – Here.
The full RETRO REPLAY experience will return next week. This week we covered the return of Nintendo NES boxing classic Punch-Out!
