Tablet roaming charges potentially reach 1000 times normal costs

Research from Which? has been carried out to further explain the myriad of costs, terms, conditions and small print associated with taking your 3G tablet across the border, and frankly, it would be easier to take your pet. Certainly cheaper too.

Apparently, in the UK a Gigabyte of internet data (estimated around 350 songs downloaded) can cost up to 7.50GBP, but roaming prices certainly inflate that figure, with Which’s studies suggesting bills could rise to potentially thousands of pounds, just by simply watching YouTube videos, browsing the net and using email, albeit for several hours.

The study also suggests that the recently implemented cut-off point for data roaming of 40 pounds may be hit by tablet users extraordinarily quickly when travelling within the EU.

The big man at Which?, Peter Vicary-Smith said: “Until data costs come down, anyone considering their tablet or mobile for using the net abroad should steer well clear of 3G data roaming and use free Wi-Fi access where available instead.”

Solid advice there from Which?, a company with a track-record of doing the consumer proud. Thanks Peter.
