HTC Working on a Media Player to Rival Apple’s iPod Touch

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC could be looking at ways to introduce a stylish multimedia device akin to Apple’s iPod Touch, as several recently leaked designs show.

The designs tell us little to nothing about the technical specifications of such a device, but the design aspect is clearly on show, and it’s looking promising. HTC’s media player device (it currently has no name as it’s merely a design) looks to be a little larger than the iPod Touch, but around the same size as some of HTC’s higher end smartphones. It features a kickstand on the back to allow the device to stand on its own – something that has featured before on HTC products like the HD7 – perfect for viewing movies.

On the front of the device HTC proposes stereo speakers for enhanced loudspeaker audio, again ideal for watching films and videos. The design places a speaker either side of the screen at the top and bottom of the product, so that when it sits horizontally on its kickstand, the speakers line up as left and right.

The design also shows a camera lens on the back, and what looks to be some sort of conductive dock connectors on the base.

Although they haven’t made one before, an iPod Touch-like media player from HTC isn’t a far-fetched idea; the company can produce some stunning gadgets with incredible build quality, and it has a host of services within its company that would make such a product a tip-top media player.

For instance, HTC has Beats Audio, with which it can integrate high quality loudspeakers, premium headphones and customisable EQ software – all perfect for a great mp3/mp4 player. HTC’s Watch service will also offer on-demand movie rentals on the device, while the company’s rumoured acquisition of MOG could offer music streaming options in the future. As for software, the device would likely run on Android along with HTC’s Sense user interface.

This design has got us thinking about what we’d love to see HTC put into a media player. What would you like from such a product?
