GSLive 2011: Vuzix Wrap 920 head tracking with Flight Sim

  • by

We headed over to take a look at what the guys from Vuzix had on offer today at the Gadget Show Live, and we’ve got some interesting info up our sleeves for you which we’ll reveal in the next day or so.

For now though, we thought we would share with you a look at how the Vuzix Wrap 920 eyewear works with the 6-DoF Head Tracking unit which Vuzix sell as an accessory.

The 6-DoF (that’s Degrees of Freedom) tracker is a tiny chip, about the size of your thumbnail, which connects to the Wrap 920 and upcoming Wrap 1200 eyewear via a small port above the top right screen. You won’t even know it’s there!

Despite it being a tracker with the capability to provide 6 Degrees of Freedom (directions or ways in which you can move your head), at present nobody has developed software to utilise this next-gen technology. Fortunately though, 3-DoF tracking is available and works brilliantly, especially in games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator.

You can check out the Vuzix Wrap 920 and 6-DoF head tracker in action below, where The Gadget Helpline’s very own Ashley is testing out a pair at the trade booth.

Pretty cool stuff, huh! Let us know your thoughts on the video, and feel free to ask us anything about the product by leaving a comment or tweeting us @Gadget_Helpline. You can also check out the Vuzix products here.
