Flappy Bird Officially Returns

Uh oh. It’s Flappy Bird again. You may remember this frustratingly addictive smartphone app from earlier in the year, which spawned many, many clones following its removal from official sources and app stores. But where has Flappy Bird been? All will be revealed as Flappy Bird is back, as the rumours foretold, and is bringing along the relatives, in the all new Flappy Birds Family.

However, you may be surprised to know that this long awaited official re-release of Flappy Bird won’t be coming to smartphones, and instead is only available in the Amazon Appstore for Android, and in what seems like an exclusive partnership, is limited to only function on the Amazon Fire TV set-top box.

The game features three Flappy Bird characters so far, the original, slightly fishy in appearance Flappy Bird, a pink, possibly female Flappy Bird, and a blue, slightly boxy Flappy Bird with a gruff appearance (Flappy Bird senior?). With these characters it’s possible to play the game with two players using the Amazon Fire TV video game controller to bounce those birdies through new obstacle courses, which now include ghosts to avoid.

Flappy Bird, Flappy Birdette and Flappy Bird Sr.

The app’s creator, Dong Nguyen, released the original Flappy Bird early in the year, but pulled the app from stores as he said it was ‘too addictive’ for some users, even posing a problem for heavy users. Nguyen also told Rolling Stone that the chart topping app was bringing in $50,000 a day in revenue. This fame ultimately may have had an impact the app’s creator who sadly posted to Twitter “I cannot take this anymore” after the whirlwind success of the game.

Hopefully Nguyen is feeling better after having a nice breather from the shock success of Flappy Bird with this new release of Flappy Birds Family. The game is free to play on the Amazon Play Store and is only currently available for Amazon Fire TV. We’ll get back to you if the game does emerge once again for mobiles.
