BBC iPlayer App Lands on Samsung ES7000 and ES8000 Smart TVs

[tab name=’News’]

Gadget Helpline has received reports this morning that the BBC has finally launched its popular iPlayer app for Samsung’s latest ranges of Smart TV.

BBC iPlayer has been available on most Samsung Smart TVs for a while now, but those who have recently purchased models from Samsung’s ES7000 and ES8000 ranges that were launched earlier this year will have noticed an absence of the app.

Both Samsung and BBC have confirmed that the app was removed to be tested and tweaked to work perfectly with the new tellys, and Gadget Helpline can now exclusively confirm that the BBC iPlayer app has launched on the Samsung Smart Hub for these excellent TVs.

The app is a free download and can be found by heading into the Smart Hub on your TV and opening Samsung Apps. We’ve had a quick hands-on with the app and it appears to be very smooth and fluid with no noticeable issues. It works very similarly to iPlayer for the PS3, for those who are familiar.

Unfortunately the app doesn’t offer the ability to view live broadcasting from the BBC channels as you can on the website, but it still offers a wide range of programs to view on-demand. With Samsung’s new Smart LED TVs you have the ability to convert 2D to 3D anywhere, and this worked pretty nicely on the ES8000 model that we used earlier today.

Several app and firmware updates should await ES7000 and ES8000 users today which should update the App catalog to offer BBC iPlayer. Let us know if you manage to download the app, and how you’re getting on with it.

Thanks, Jason!

I spoke to Samsung yesterday. They advised that there will be another update to the app “soon” which will fix the timeout issues and enable streaming of programmes.

I just got this from Samsung:
This issue has been brought to our attention and I can confirm that the app has been fully released for the ES7000 and ES8000. However, although you can view the app it is still undergoing testing for lower models. As it is up to the BBC to maintain and develop the app we have to wait for them to respond to the issue before a fix can be rolled out. We expect this issue to hopefully be resolved in the coming weeks.

Not supported on my device Ue26eh4500. It took a lot of patience for the update to install and then it said it wasn’t supported on my device! False advertising is not making me happy!
