Android tablets finally make an impact, but iPad still dominates

  • by

A report has been published by the global research and consulting firm Stategy Analytics on the current Tablet market and the results are both intriguing and promising for Android lovers. Unsurprisingly, tablet sales grew at an explosive rate; 15.1 million were sold in the second quarter, compared to 3.5 million in the same period of 2010.

The report has given a few different pieces of information, the most obvious is maybe the fact that Apple’s iPad is still dominating the Tablet market with around 60% of the market share. Possibly a little less obvious was the fact that Android is steadily catching up with Apple, with Android-based tablets now claiming over 30% of the market share. Which in terms of market share lead means the iOS tablet’s lead is nearly three times smaller this quarter than the same time last year.

We also have a new player to the tablet game, the QNX-based Blackberry Playbook, which has racked up 500,000 sales since release, but bugs and software limitations have meant that the device has not even overtaken Windows 7 Tablets which have sold more than 700,000 devices.
