Android ICS Only on 10% of Devices with Gingerbread Still on Top!

[tab name=’News’]

Google has announced its latest Android Operating System stats to the public today and the information is showcasing that its latest OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, is now on 10% of all Android handsets worldwide.

The Android Developers site regularly updates people on the usage of the Android system, and just 9 months after it was launched the ICS still only has as small foothold compared to the other OS versions.

Leading the pack is the last general version of Android, Gingerbread 2.3, which is present on a massive 64% of all Android running devices, with FroYo 2.1 appearing on a further 17% and Éclair holding up the rear with just under 5%.

The information was collated from data collected during a 14-day period ending on July 2, 2012 and covers all Android sporting devices from smartphones to tablets.

One of the major issues affecting the ICS coverage has been the somewhat strenuous rollout of the update across many mobile phone manufacturers, with Samsung, HTC, and Sony all having publicised issues with updating their top handsets to the latest OS.

With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean also around the corner it may be that ICS will never get the full coverage it deserved, as it may be superseded in the time that it takes to fix the Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility issues.

Android has, in the past year, seen a massive growth in handsets that support ICS, with many of the phones originally coming with FroYo or Gingerbread pre-installed so we can probably expect Gingerbread to hang around on older handsets for the next couple of years as many phones simply cannot upgrade to the next OS due to internal specifications and restrictions.
