Amazon Android tablet release date scheduled for late 2011?

  • by

There’ve been numerous rumours that it’s on the way, but now a source close to the manufacturing process claims to have a release date: according to news this morning, the Amazon Kindle tablet will be released later this year.

The gossip comes from DigiTimes, who claims to have a source high up the manufacturing ladder. The source suggests that Amazon’s LCD-screened tablet will come to market in the second half of the year, with a volume of around 700,000 units passing through the factory doors each month. The source claims that the device will feature a LCD display and separate touch panel, the latter of which is being put together by E Ink Holdings.

So what will an Amazon Tablet offer? Our guess would be that, despite the bespoke OS on Amazon’s Kindle readers, a fully-functioning tablet will probably run on Android. This makes sense for two reasons: the first is that the existing Amazon Kindle Android app could provide the device with an easy book-buying platform, while the second is that the recently-launched Amazon App Store for Android could be fully intgrated.
